Museum of Mosaics Devnya

The museum was founded as a result of archaeological research that began in 1976. The research uncovered the House of Antiope, a Late Roman villa decorated with floor mosaics. The villa was constructed in the late 3rd or early 4th century AD, possibly during the rule of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. The villa was built on the site of earlier buildings that were destroyed during the Gothic raids and was abandoned in the 7th century due to invasions by Avars and Slavs. The museum is located in a small park and features ancient walls, which along with the villa, constitute most of the preserved ruins of Marcianopolis. The modern museum building was designed by architect Kamen Goranov, but some have criticized its construction for damaging the Roman ruins. The museum displays items pertaining to the Roman villa and its inhabitants, including frescoes and stucco, as well as the elaborate mosaics on the floors of the portico and five rooms.
